Where it fits in your Korea trip
Most US travelers give Korea about 10 days and start in Seoul. With 13–16 hours of flying each way, that leaves about 8 nights on the ground. Gangwon fits as two quiet weeknights in the middle, then back to Seoul to fly home.
Seoul Land at Incheon (ICN) and start here, like 54 of 68 multi-city US trips did. Myeongdong was the most common base (31 of 76 trips that named a Seoul neighborhood).
Nights 5–6
Gangwon Express bus from Dong Seoul to Yangyang or Sokcho, about 2 hours. Make them Sunday–Thursday nights: a Yangyang beach hotel averaged ₩74,484 on Mondays and ₩144,987 on Saturdays (KAYAK, checked Oct 14, 2026).
Nights 7–8
Seoul Back to Seoul, then fly home from Incheon. 30 of 68 multi-city US trips (44%) ended in Seoul or Incheon.
Don't over-pack. The fix experienced travelers suggested most often on US first-timers' plans: too many cities (20 of 63 Reddit plan posts).
12–14 days with Busan and Jeju? Seoul 4 → Busan 3 (KTX) → Jeju 3 (fly) → fly back to Seoul → Gangwon 1–2 → last night in Seoul. Put Gangwon right before your final Seoul stop.
Based on: 185 trips by US travelers — 82 from US YouTube channels and 103 r/koreatravel posts (Oct 2023–Oct 2026), counted by our team. Gangwon came up in 21; most were Seoul day trips (Nami Island 7, Seoraksan tours 5), and most of the 9 that stayed slept 1–2 nights. Korea's tourism ministry: US visitors usually stay 12–14 days (MCST, Apr 30, 2024).
Korean Pick
Koreans go here a lot. Foreign visitors mostly don't. Nature first; town and food at the end.

Getting there
From Gangneung Station: Anmok 4.4 km, tofu village 3.6 km (straight line).
Popular with Koreans and with visitors. Worth it anyway.

Only where we have numbers. Not bad places — just not where Koreans are heading now.
1
Nami Island (Chuncheon)Tour-bus heavy
Why
7 of the 21 US trips that touched Gangwon were Nami Island day trips. It is the only spot on our list where English videos beat Korean ones (median 1,813 vs 615 views), and Korean searches fell 20% in a year. Not a scam — just crowded with tours.
Want trees and water? Spend that day at Seoraksan, or a Yangyang valley in summer.
This year's most-watched Korean videos on it ask why it emptied out (818,739 and 623,165 views). Korean searches peak only in December, for the New Year sunrise.
Want the sea instead? Gyeongpo Beach is 4.4 km from Gangneung Station.
For many Koreans, summer water means a mountain valley before it means a beach.

A valley here is a clear river in a forested gorge: flat granite, shallow pools, pine shade. Families bring folding chairs, snacks and inner tubes and stay all afternoon. Many small guesthouses sit right on the water.
Our photo was taken in front of a riverside guesthouse in Seo-myeon, Yangyang, 8.4 km (straight line) from Yangyang bus terminal. In the plan below, it can replace Day 2 in July or August.
When
July and August. Korean searches peak in July; by September they fall to under a tenth of August.
English interest
Not measured well: our English YouTube searches for Korean valleys returned mostly unrelated videos.
Water safety: Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Safety counted 104 water-play deaths in 2021–2025; 28 (27%) were in valleys, more than at beaches (24). It asks people to wear a life jacket and not to swim after drinking. (Asia Economy, Jul 26, 2026)

The five things that came up again and again in those videos, in the travelers' own words.
Go on a weekday, and start early. Seoraksan fills up on autumn weekends; one couple found the cable car sold out for the day. Another video says cable car slots can't be booked ahead, so turn up early (we have not checked this with the operator).5 videos

The famous hikes are harder than they look. Ulsanbawi ends in a long run of steep stairs beside the rock face. Two groups said they underestimated it.6 videos

Getting around, step by step
In the order you'll need it: before you fly, at Incheon, the ride east, then taxis and buses on the coast.
1Before you fly
Maps: download Naver Map or Kakao Map. "Google Maps doesn't work here" came up in 9 US sources; it was the advice in 10 of 63 Reddit plan threads.
Kakao T (taxi app): sign up at home and test one booking. Kakao Mobility says cards issued abroad (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB) can be added. The usual snag is the text-message check: some foreign SIMs don't receive it.
A Korean number: guides disagree on whether Kakao T needs one to finish a booking. If your test fails, get a Korean eSIM or SIM. Some Korean sites ask for one too (5 US trips hit this).
Trains: Korail's English site takes foreign cards.
Express buses:kobus.co.kr has an English menu. In July 2026 it was reported to start taking foreign cards in August; we could not confirm that it does.
T-money card: buy one at a convenience store inside the airport (₩3,000–5,000, by design). Top-ups are cash only, so bring some won. 10 US trips ran into the cash problem.
Airport train (AREX) to Seoul Station: the all-stop train takes 59 min from Terminal 1 (66 min from Terminal 2): ₩4,750 / ₩5,350 with a transit card. The express takes 43 / 51 min, ₩13,000; buy its ticket before you board.
To the bus terminals by subway: Dong Seoul is at Gangbyeon Station (Line 2). Seoul Express Bus Terminal is at Express Bus Terminal Station (Lines 3, 7 and 9).
Times: see the table in Getting there: express buses to Yangyang, Sokcho and Naksan; KTX to Gangneung from Cheongnyangni or Seoul Station.
Weekends: bookings, sell-outs and lines came up in 21 US trips. Book ahead; the Sunday–Thursday plan above also dodges the rush.
Staying at Grand Bay? From the Naksan bus stop it's 0.3 km on foot.
Kakao T works; pay the driver. Paying in the app with a foreign card often fails. Choose "Pay the driver" instead: you get a regular taxi and pay with your card, T-money or cash in the car.
k.ride, Kakao's app for visitors, signs you up with Google, Apple or email and charges a foreign card, but it offers only pricier car classes (Blue, Venti, Black and up), with extra fees. Uber: we found no report of it in Gangwon.
In US trip reports, 37 sources took app taxis and none reported being overcharged (0 of 37). How many app taxis run in Sokcho or Yangyang: not checked.
Show the driver Korean names. The bus terminals' Korean names are under Getting there.
Tipping: Korea has no tipping custom, and taxi drivers don't expect tips. Gangneung's tourism site adds that they do appreciate it if you let them keep the change. Paying cash, leaving the coins is a small kindness, not a rule. Pay by card and there's no change to leave.
Now (Oct–Nov): autumn leaves. Seoraksan is forecast to peak on Oct 20 (Korea Forest Service, via Maeil Shinmun). Korean searches in October: Odaesan 5.1× its quietest month, Seoraksan 3.2×.
Summer (Jul–Aug): valleys and the sea. Koreans search 'valley' 2.6× as often as 'beach' in July–August. Searches for Gyeongpo and Jumunjin beaches peak in July.
Winter (Dec–Feb): snow. The area hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics (Pyeongchang, Gangneung). Jeongdongjin's searches peak in December, for the New Year sunrise.
Good to know
English help: call 1330 (Korea Travel Helpline, English 24 hours) — KTO.
Renting a car: bring an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna type) plus your home license and passport. Korean law: Road Traffic Act, Article 96 — we read this in secondary sources only; check law.go.kr and your rental company.
KORAIL PASS: fine for KTX, but whether it covers tourist trains like the Santa train is unclear in Korail's own wording. Ask before you count on it.
